New CFIA PFAS Standards: Are You Prepared?

In June 2024, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) announced important new PFAS standards on the sale or importation of commercial biosolids for use as fertilizers. As a pioneer in PFAS testing in Canada and the authors of EPA 1633, SGS is happy to help you conform to this new standard with high-quality and timely EPA 1633 testing.

What is the Regulation?

T-4-132 – Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) standard for commercial biosolids imported or sold in Canada as fertilizers provides guidance to importers and domestic producers of commercial biosolids on the interim standard for PFAS in biosolids imported or sold in Canada as fertilizers or supplements. The rule sets a limit on one specific PFAS, PFOS to be less than 50 parts per billion (ppb or ng/g) on a dry weight basis to be allowed for sale or import.

What does it apply to?

The CFIA website has more information and when in doubt, contact the CFIA. In short, it applies to all commercial biosolids regardless of whether they are on the list of primary fertilizer and supplementary materials or not. The rule currently does not apply to mixtures of commercial biosolids and other fertilizers, and other wastes such as composts, anaerobic digestates, ash, pulp and paper sludges, source separated organics.

When does the regulation come into force?

18-October-2024 which provides stakeholders with 4 months from date of publication to comply.

How can you comply?

  1. As mandated by the standard, get your product tested by an ISO-17025 accredited laboratory using the US EPA method 1633 to show that PFOS is < 50 ppb. EPA 1633 is the ONLY method allowed by the CFIA. The sampling requirements mandate testing every 6 months.
  2. Fill out an attestation form that will be available at this website prior to final implementation

How can SGS help You?

SGS Canada wrote and validated EPA 1633 for the US EPA and are the most experienced and accomplished lab network running this method. Only EPA 1633 is authorized for testing by the EPA. Our Canadian and US lab network (depending on where your samples are originating) are well equipped to help you comply with this standard from providing you with the appropriate sampling supplies and providing high-quality and timely PFOS Certificate of Analysis to help you demonstrate compliance.
